Ready for Rain?

Published: February 10, 2012

Spring approaches and with it thoughts of that brief window we call summer.  We have all been stuck inside for too many months.  That is of course the catch with the British summer; are we to be outside in the sunshine or watching the rain bounce on the patio.  How many times have you heard yourself say that it’s only a shower, it will pass, or huddled next to the barbeque with an umbrella.  We are all in denial and help is at hand.  That parasol in the centre of the table, provides shelter from the sun (well rain actually). Next up is the gazebo where the table stays dry and the people sit around the edge where the rain drips.

The verandah has evolved; they are no longer a period curiosity but can be considered a patio roof.  Extending the time you can use your patio at both ends of the season.

There are a vast range of styles to suit each house and budget, modern materials such as polycarbonate and aluminium provide clean crisp lines that sit equally well on a modern or period house, and can be powder coated in many colours. The posts offer an opportunity to customise the look of your canopy, the use of solid oak for example gives
a look of solidity and permanence. Lighting can be integrated into the rafters and side screens can provide further protection from the elements, not to mention privacy.

Another benefit is the protection afforded to your patio furniture from rain and snow, eliminating the need to find room in your shed or garage.

The typical installation time of one day means that the cost is substantially lower then an equivalent conservatory.  For example a 3m x 3m canopy could be installed from £1100.00.

The folding sliding door has gained popularity over the last few years and it is easy to see why as when open the give a real sense of space.  This popularity has led to the availability of tri-fold sets designed to directly replace existing patio or French door. Whilst still relatively expensive they are now rather more affordable.

They are an ideal partner to a verandah, allowing you to blur the distinction between inside and out, opening your living space into your garden.
